Categorize your definitions page
Organize and Connect! Let's Categorize a Page!
Categories are like digital filing cabinets that help organize and connect related pages on a wiki. By adding a page to a category, you make it easier for others to find information on a specific topic. Here's how to do it:
Understanding Categories
- Categories are pages that list other pages.
- They help users browse and find related content.
- They are created and managed by wiki users.
Finding Existing Categories
- Browse Existing Pages:
- Look at similar pages on the wiki to see what categories they use.
- Categories are usually listed at the bottom or side of a page.
- Use the Category Index:
- Justice Definitions Wiki has a list of categories.
- You can find this page by searching for Special:Categories in the search bar above.
- Use the Search Function:
- Type "Category:" followed by your topic into the search bar.
- For example, "Category:Intellectual Property Rights."
- Check the Help Pages:
- The wiki's help pages may provide information about categories.
Adding a Page to a Category
- Open the Page for Editing:
- Go to the page you want to categorize and click the "Edit source" button.
- Add the Category Tag:
- At the very bottom of the page, add the category tag in the following format:
- [[Category:Category Name]]
- Replace "Category Name" with the actual name of the category.
- If you want to add the page to multiple categories, add each category on a new line: [[Category:Category Name 1]] [[Category:Category Name 2]]
- At the very bottom of the page, add the category tag in the following format:
- Preview Your Changes:
- Click the "Show preview" button to see how the categories will appear.
- Publish Your Changes:
- If you're happy with your changes, click the "Publish changes" button.
Tips for Categorizing Pages
- Be Specific:
- Use the most specific category possible.
- Avoid using overly broad categories.
- Use Existing Categories:
- Try to use existing categories instead of creating new ones.
- This helps keep the wiki organized.
- Check Category Names:
- Make sure you spell the category names correctly.
- Misspelled category names will create new, empty categories.
- Follow Wiki Guidelines:
- Some wikis have specific guidelines for categorizing pages.
- Check the help pages for information.
- Don't Over-Categorize:
- Only add categories that are relevant to the page's content.
Example
- If you're editing a page about the "Licensing" you might add it to the following categories:
- [[Category:Browse Alphabetically]]
- [[Category:Intellectual Property Rights]]
- [[Category:Intellectual Property Law]]
- [[Category:Corporate Contract Law]]
