Ready to Share Your Knowledge? Let's Create a Page!

Creating a new page on a wiki is a fantastic way to contribute and share information. Don't worry, it's easier than you might think! Here's a friendly guide to get you started:

Before You Begin

  • Check If the Page Already Exists:
    • Use the search bar to see if a page on your topic already exists. You don't want to create a duplicate!
  • Make Sure Your Topic Is Relevant:
    • Ensure your topic aligns with the wiki's scope and guidelines. Some wikis have specific rules about what types of pages are allowed.
  • Gather Your Information:
    • Have your information and sources ready before you start writing. This will make the process much smoother.

Creating Your Page

  1. Use the Search Bar (For Red Links):
    • Type the exact name of the page you want to create into the search bar.
    • If the page doesn't exist, you'll see a message that says something like, "Create the page '[YourPageName]' on this wiki!" and a red link to the page. Click that red link.
    • Red links are links to pages that do not yet exist. Creating a link to a page within another page, and then clicking the red link, is another way to start a new page.
  2. Start Writing!
    • You'll now be on a blank page in edit mode.
    • Begin writing your content.
    • Remember to:
      • Use clear and concise language.
      • Organize your content with headings (== Heading ==).
      • Provide accurate and verifiable information.
      • Cite your sources and hyperlink with the relev ant URLs wherever possible.
  3. Use Wiki Visual Editor:
    • Use the formatting toolbar on the top with dropdowns for editing page content. The formatting toolbar has following options:
      • Undo & redo
      • Format paragraph
      • Style text
      • Link
      • Cite
      • Structure
      • Insert
      • Special characters
      • Help
      • Edit notices
      • Page options
      • Switch editor
    • For more detail, please check our editing guide
  4. Add Categories (If Applicable):
    • Categories help organize pages.
    • Add categories at the bottom of your page like this: [[Category:Your Category]]
    • Check what categories the wiki already uses, to make sure you use existing categories.
  5. Preview Your Page:
    • Before you save, click the "Show preview" button to see how your page will look.
    • This is a great way to catch any errors.
  6. Add a Summary:
    • Below the edit box, there is a small box to add a summary. In this box, add a short description of what you have done in your edit. For example, "Created new page about X".
  7. Publish Your Page!
    • Once you're happy with your page, click the "Publish changes" button.

Tips for Creating a Great Page

  • Follow the Wiki's Guidelines:
    • Each wiki may have its own specific guidelines for creating pages.
    • Look for help pages or style guides.
  • Be Neutral and Objective:
    • Present information in a balanced and unbiased way.
  • Cite Your Sources:
    • Provide reliable sources to back up your information.
  • Proofread Carefully:
    • Check your page for spelling and grammar errors.
  • Start Small and Build:
    • You don't have to create a perfect page right away. You can always edit and improve it later.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help:
    • If you are unsure about something, ask other users for help.
